To Pete Sayers In May One of Nashville’s most popular exports, George
Hamilton IV, is set to present a George explains that “it’ll be an evening of country-gospel music with special guests and a few of Pete’s pickin’ buddies”. Admission is free and there will be a collection with all proceeds to the church repair fund. Pete Sayers was one of Britain’s most successful country music entertainers who, in the late 1960s/early 70s, enjoyed a successful career in Nashville with his own television series. Upon his return to Britain he created his band the Radio Cowboys, launched the Newmarket Opry and enjoyed a diverse career that took in recording, television shows, touring and summer seasons. He died on February 11, following a lengthy battle with cancer. The forthcoming tribute is part of George IV's latest round of British appearances which takes in both secular and religious performances, and commenced last month with a 2½ week (March 13-29) concert tour of Ireland and Scotland with Scottish folk singer Alastair McDonald. It was followed by a brief return to native shores for a week of concerts in Ontario, Canada (April 5-11). George IV returns to the U.K. later this month to present his unique country-gospel show in English Churches followed, in May, by a tour of Scottish Churches. Among the other highlights scheduled in this ever busy entertainer’s diary are:
Last autumn George Hamilton IV was presented with a Special Award from the BCMA (British Country Music Association) in recognition of his groundbreaking international activities over the years. With his forthcoming schedule, it’s obvious that the International Ambassador of Country Music doesn’t intend to rest upon his laurels!
